#FeministPrincessBride: This Feminist Twist On “The Princess Bride” Will Give You Life

Great find by your colleague, Gillian P.!

By Buzzfeed:

"Canadian writer Anne Thériault recently took to Twitter to vent her frustration over Time magazine including the word “feminist” in a poll on words that should be banned." And so it explodes into #FeministPrincessBride...

SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR "The Second Sex"

An essay I had to read for philosophy written in 1946 with an interesting perspective:

SlutRock DC

For those that haven't heard about SlutRock DC, it is happening this Saturday.
https://www.facebook.com/events/420699071372669/

Description::
SlutWalk is a worldwide movement against victim-blaming, survivor-shaming, and rape culture. Originated in Toronto in 2011, it started as a direct response to a Toronto Police Services officer perpetuating rape myths by stating “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized“. The march and the issues it addresses have struck such a chord that marches have been organized in over 200 communities in North, Central & South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa.
Initially named “SlutWalk” as a direct response to the police officer’s comment, the name resonated because of a particularly pervasive and insidious form of victim-blaming: shaming the survivor while making assumptions about their sexuality. The term “slut-shaming” was coined to help name and discuss that issue, because of the way so many survivors have been bullied, blamed, and degraded for attacks against them by being called terms such as “slut”.

We are asking you to join us for SlutROCK D.C. 2014, to make a unified statement about sexual assault and victims’ rights and to demand respect for all. You needn't claim the word slut for yourself; whether a fellow slut or simply an ally, you don’t have to wear your sexual proclivities on your sleeve, we just ask that you come. Any gender-identification, any age. Singles, couples, parents, sisters, brothers, children, friends. Come walk or roll or strut or holler or stomp with us.

I'll be there with a friend from home, Karoline. If you're going, email me and we could meet up.

Bad Romance --> Women's Suffrage = Best. Video. Ever.

Brilliant find by Erika F. and Genevieve T.! Once you watch "Iron Jawed Angels," you'll notice the little details, too.

What do you think? Is it effective? Useful? Problematic?

"It's Time for White Feminists to Stop Talking About Solidarity and Start Acting"

Just one of many articles discussing the ongoing racial tensions in feminism:

8 Latina Feminists Who Deserve More Recognition

This week in class we've been talking about white women benefitting from other women's labor. In colonial America, African slaves were the choice du jour. Today, most domestic workers are Latina. While they are often marginalized even within feminism, Latina and Chicana feminists have been rocking it out for decades!

Sarkeesian threatened at Utah State University

Saw this article on a technology site I read. It's an on going story, but this is the most recent event. Sarkeesian is the creator of Tropes vs. Women. It's a video series where she analyzes popular video games through a feminist lens. She's been the target of a lot of angry from anonymous internet users.

Thought it was interesting

Etymology of "Bitch"

Your colleague, Margeaux, shared a fascinating etymology on the word "bitch" - check it out!

The rise of bitch through history can be traced to 4 distinct periods: The Definition, The Rise, the Reclamation, and the Popularization. The last 3 can be tied to specific events in American feminism.

Christian Morality and Female Body Image

Eve ate the apple and the rest of us have been dealing with the consequences ever since. From cream cheese to calorie control, Christian morality and theology have had a huge influence on what we eat and how we look at bodies, both our own and those of others, writes Masako Fukui. The media are routinely blamed for our cultural obsession with thinness, but Christian images and ideas profoundly influence how we perceive our bodies today. Read the article here: http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/encounter/5319178

Cosmetics from Ancient Egypt to the Modern World

Makeup has a rich and lengthy history that spans the globe and crosses cultures. From 10,000 B.C.E. to the 20th century, people have been using cosmetics to enhance their looks -- sometimes with unintended side effects.
